FROM SENATOR DIANE SNELLING

August 30, 2006

Dear Friend,

It has been an honor to serve you in the Vermont State Senate. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and for the responsibility, to be a strong advocate for the people of Chittenden County. Thank you for your generous support in the past and I hope you will help me win re-election again. With great persistence, I’ve built a reputation for a non-partisan approach to issues. I would like to continue to use those skills and that experience to help create a better future for Vermont.

Good government must include a process of shared voices, balanced thinking and working together. There are many difficult challenges ahead to meet Vermont’s urgent and growing needs. They are all crucial policy issues of creating and sustaining healthy communities and improving the quality of life for all Vermonters. It will take calm determination and dedicated individuals who know how to collaborate to achieve the right solutions.

As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I participate in many key decisions.

I understand how difficult it is to balance the state budget with so many competing needs. For the past two years I have also served on the Conference Committee for the budget. There are no easy answers, but I believe we must have a government within our means and still provide an essential safety net. We can’t give up on that goal.

I’m very proud of the work we did in the Natural Resources and Energy Committee on the new planning legislation for Growth Centers. This comprehensive vision for the future will allow our state to grow and prosper. From the local level, it will help create more livable neighborhoods and a better business climate. It will also help protect and preserve the essential character of the Vermont landscape that we all value so much.

I’m campaigning hard, attending events and forums, and talking with lots of people.

The Chittenden Senate race is always hard with as many as 18 candidates on the ballot.

There are six seats and I need to keep my name at the top to win. My campaign is based on the issues and on my track record for effective non-partisan leadership, but I’ll still need your generous financial support. I also need volunteers, like you, who care deeply about Vermont to encourage others to participate and to vote.

Your vote and your support can make a difference for the future of Vermont. Every dollar counts and every contribution is gratefully appreciated. Thank you

Sincerely,

Senator Diane Snelling

THE BURLINGTON FREE PRESS ENDORSES DIANE SNELLING

(10/20/04)  "Thirteen candidates are vying for the six seats... Based on interviews and consideration of their positions, credentials, range of contributions, good ideas and enthusiasm, The Burlington Free Press recommends six individuals as citizen legislators. Each candidate is worthy of your vote. ...

"Moderate and thoughtful, Snelling has proved to be a nonpartisan bridge-builder in her years in the Senate. Because of her well-known political family, she said she tends to shy away from the spotlight and do her homework quietly. Her roots are deep in Vermont as daughter of the late Gov. Richard Snelling and former Lt. Gov. and Senator Barbara Snelling. She was selected by former Gov. Howard Dean to succeed her mother, who resigned her Senate seat because she was ailing in 2000. Diane Snelling ran in 2002 and won the only Republican seat for Chittenden County. She was a member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee and worked on mental health issues. She is an artist and a creative consultant, a former New York City designer and a former member of the Hinesburg Select Board and numerous community organizations. She wants to take a hard look at the health care structure and be aggressive in making prescription drugs more affordable."

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

With a track record of success in the Senate, I’m proud of my reputation for being focused on issues and working toward bi-partisan solutions.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND PROMOTING GOOD JOBS

Vermont’s landscape must be protected. It takes planning and commitment to preserve its rural qualities while encouraging the kinds of jobs we need to build healthy communities.

BELIEVING IN VERMONT VALUES

Honesty, Integrity, Hard Work and Mutual Respect. These are the values we share and that make Vermont special.
