SENATOR DIANE SNELLING'S ANNOUNCEMENT Senator Diane Snelling of Hinesburg announced today that she is a candidate for the Senate from Chittenden County and will seek the Republican Party nomination in September. Ms. Snelling, an artist and community activist, was appointed in January 2002 by Gov. Howard Dean to complete her mother’s term in the Vermont Senate. Barbara Snelling, who also served as Lt. Governor from 1992-1996, and as First Lady to Governor Richard A. Snelling, resigned for health reasons. Sen. Diane Snelling served on the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee and the Senate Education Committee. “This was an exciting session and I’d like to go back to the Senate. I’m proud of the legislation I worked on, especially the new storm water regulations. I believe a clean environment is essential. It was an honor to meet so many fine people dedicated to Vermont and to make such good friends on both sides of the aisle. I’d like to continue to explore creative solutions and opportunities for agreement not argument.” “I don’t like labels, but if I have to have one, I’m a moderate who listens to the evidence and tries to makes well reasoned decisions. I’m a Republican because I believe a healthy economy creates a healthy community and that we need people who understand the difficult but necessary balance between services and resources. In addition, I’m grateful that both of my parents have been excellent role models in the exercise of independent thinking.” “Public service is the bottom line of politics and it’s a big responsibility to serve in the Legislature but it’s also a privilege. Chittenden County is where I’m from and it’s my home, I’ve seen it grow and change and I hope to be a positive part of its’ future.” “I support women’s rights, tolerance and diversity and will also work hard on behalf of the elderly, the disabled and the mentally ill.”
